It started in 1995.
People in Ash Grove started disappearing.
But people disappear all the time. Kidnappings, murders... it's tragic, but it happens. So no one thought it was out of the ordinary when a few teenagers of Ash Grove never came home. Sad, yes. But nothing new.
But their bodies were never found. Stranger still, they all vanished within the same 24 hours. A few detectives tried to pry the case open, but the file remained cold for the next 16 years, up to the present. No one knew about the two shacks.
If you were to drive a half hour outside of town, you might find yourself among acres of abandoned crop fields. Overgrown and untamed, it's near impossible to find the small, vague deer trail through the wild crops. But suppose you did. You might follow it on foot for another twenty minutes, and at the end, you might find yourself in front of a small building, only large enough to contain one room. It's cracked and decrepit, and it has no windows and one door. Now suppose you had a key. Upon entering, you'd find yourself in one empty, dusty room, containing nothing but a flight of stairs leading down. If you were to follow them down, you would find yourself in a large, elaborate, underground maze of rooms known as The Peterson Lab.
Or suppose you chose to travel through the forest, a good two hours outside of town by car. Long after the road had ended, you might find yourself on the skirt of the Bayou, clouded with a light fog and surrounded by the screams of cicadas and the hum of mosquitos. But then, maybe you would find a small, wooden walkway held above the marshy ground that led to a small house. Squatting between the tall, lanky trees, the house is barely the size of a small apartment, and has peeling paint and a sagging porch. But let's pretend you had a key. You would walk inside, and find yourself in what appears to be an abandoned, malnourished home with three measly rooms. In the center of the house, though, you might discover a door leading down to what seems to be a basement. If you were to follow the stairs, though, you would find they go down much farther than that, opening up to a massive, complex establishment underground known as The Miller Lab.
Both labs are only known by the less-than-ethical scientists of Ash Grove and the surrounding cities. But what they do there is the information the police would die to get hold of.
By combining vital parts of human and animal DNA, the scientists of the Miller and Peterson lab have found ways to install inhuman traits in mortals; anything from animal body parts, like tails or ears, to special powers, like extraordinary strength or speed. But their test subjects are former civilians of Ash Grove--the missing teens, actually. But now that they've been scientifically modified beyond the humans they once were, how can they ever go home?
That is, if they ever manage to escape.

Our Veins is an intermediate to advanced roleplay revolving around the idea of animal-human hybrids. We have a minimum post count of 100 words, so we're very open to people of all writing styles. We believe in Quality over Quantity, so 100 word posts are okay, so long as things are happening in a relatively timely manner.
We are in the process of creating Canons for those who prefer using them, however it is not mandatory, and you're free to create your own original character. There is no limit to what kind of hybrid your character can be--any animal you can think of will suffice (unfortunately, we do not use Furries, or anthros, though--it's more like people with animal ears and or tails, or other inhuman attributes). If you don't want to be an experimented character, there are also positions open to be civilians or scientists.
We love new members! We're a very welcoming community. We're also highly LGBT friendly, and LGBT characters are welcomed as well.
All in all, there are limitless possibilities at Our Veins. We hope to see you there!
