Arabella Gladstone
"Come on you poor unfortunate soul!
Go ahead!
Make your choice!
I’m a very busy woman
And I haven’t got all day
It won’t cost much
Just your voice."
the basics,
»»character full name: Arabella Gladstone
»»age: 20
»»gender: Female
»»sexual orientation: Heterosexual
»»position: Head of Public Relations
»»race: Human
»»alliance: Government
»»powers: N/A
»»weapons: A rather long and rather sharp knife, ornately crafted with a design of vines along the blade. Though single edged, it is still more than capable of taking a life. It usually resides on it’s owner’s thigh, out of sight.
Though she doesn’t carry them with her she does also own an ornately crafter rapier and a fine yew longbow which she uses more for sport but is perfectly capable with if she can gain access to them.
the appearance,
»»eyes: Chartreuse, that is, green-yellow
»»markings: None to speak of
»»height: 5’ 6”
»»weight: 127lbs
»»general appearance:
Anyone observing Arabella would first notice her eyes, piercing, chartreuse green, almost cat-like. These eyes can soothe a man’s soul or tear it out. They are one of her best weapons. No two people look upon them exactly the same. They are rather large, and if she chooses to she can make them seem child like and innocent. Conversely she can make them seem so dangerous that brave men shrink back from her. Set in a face people have describes as ‘heart shaped’ her nose small and rounded, her mouth similarly small, but in proportion with her face and in keeping with it’s shape. Her lips are full, and seem sweet like the words that often come out of them. Her hair is practically black, though a degree of brown can be seen in the right light. It falls down, long and straight, past her shoulders, always away from her face.
The frame is small and appears fragile, belying the keen mind and strong will it holds. Standing at five and a half feet tall, Arabella cannot rely on her physical strength to make an impression. She is thin, some would say too thin. She is in no danger of starving or anything of the sort, but neither does she indulge in more food than is necessary. Her figure is close to that of an hourglass, though it isn’t emphasized particularly. Her complexion is healthy enough, though maybe just a little on the pale side. She may not be too strong, and she isn’t the fastest, but she is by no means unhealthy. She simply chooses to fight with weapons other than the physical. Though she has been trained in some degree of combat in case it ever comes to that.
Her is elegant and emphasizes her figure. Dresses are generally called for, though she has been known to don less elegant clothing for certain situations. She always dresses appropriately for the situation, making sure to make a strong impression. It may not always be a good impression, but it’s sure to be a strong one.

* Things going as planned
* Beautiful music
* Peace
* Getting her own way
* The government
* Nature
* Beauty
* Raising birds of prey
* Riding
* Fencing
*Archery
»»dislikes:
* When things go wrong
* Ugly, unsightly things
* Weakness
* People who beg
* Questioning people
* People acting above their station
* Small people with big ideas
»»strengths:
* Stoicism – Arabella is a master at hiding her emotions, she only shows what she thinks she can use. No matter what emotional pressure or physical pain she is put under she won’t show it… or at least she hasn’t done so yet.
* Lying – An ability to bend the truth is one that she possesses in abundance. She uses it often, whenever necessary. This does not mean she will always lie directly. She uses her body as much as her words to lie, being able to change how she looks from stern and accusing, to vulnerable and innocent, to kind and caring. Even those who know her are never quite sure whether she’s being truthful with them or whether it’s just an elaborate act.
* People – If there’s one thing Arabella knows, it’s people. She knows how they think and, more importantly, how to affect them. This doesn’t mean she will be able to manipulate someone on sight, but given time she can get most people to see things her way. This is particularly easy with the common, everyday folk of the settlement. They follow leaders like cattle, and are easily swayed to believe something, even though it might seem ridiculous.
* Presence – Despite being physically unimposing, Arabella maintains a huge presence through willpower and strength of mind. When she talks people listen, and when she walks in a room she is noticed.
»»weaknesses:
* Strength – Though she puts on a good show of mental force, Physically Arabella is rather lacking. She isn’t completely helpless, but the average person could probably best her in sheer power, she is forced to use other methods if she ever comes to blows.
* Her Father – If there was one person Arabella truly feared it was her father, a man skilled in the same ways as her, but to a much greater degree. He can inspire fear or awe simply by walking into a room. He is a presence, both mentally and physically. Unlike her, he maintains physical strength as well as mental. He has never shown restraint in discipline, and no matter how hard she tries not to, Arabella can’t help seeking his approval.
* Reputation – Arabella carries with her the legacy of her father. People see her as his protégé, not as a success because of her own skill. It’s useful to wield when she needs it, but more than anything she wants to be known for her own skills and achievements and not those of her father. She feels like she’s being constricted by his reputation. It is a lot to live up to, and even harder to surpass.
* Childhood – Arabella lacked a conventional childhood, and though she knows it was for a reason, it can still strike a chord within her if it is drawn attention to in just the right way.
»»secrets: She fears her father more than anything else in the world.
»»general personality:
Arabella is one of the keenest minds you are likely to meet in you’re lifetime. She has been raised, bred to be the finest of wordsmiths. All her life she was taught how to influence people using only her voice. She showed talent from a young age, and this has been nurtured, becoming her strongest feature and greatest talent. Arabella has always embraced this talent, knowing it will make her strong and useful. More importantly it will make her father proud of her. More than anything else in the world, Arabella wants to please her father. When he is in the room it is that much harder for her to remain calm and keep her composure. When he is angry or disappointed with her she breaks down, nothing but a weeping child. No-one sees this though. Both she and her father know that her reputation would be ruined if she were to be publicly humiliated by him, so they both keep things professional around others. Above all else Arabella knows that she must present herself as a solid force. She must never appear weak, must never look hesitant, must never go back on a decision or back down to the will of another other than the council. In her professional life Arabella is cold, calculating and almost cruel. The governess of the realm; unflappable, never unsure of herself. She deals always with confidence about her. When she speaks to the public however, the coldness leaves her. She appears warm, open and inviting like an old friend. She speaks each word as though she believes it with all her heart, and maintains both an air of authority and openness. She is the friend every person wants, the one who not only listens, but pledges to do something. At least that’s how she appears. She is a master at doing what she wants and passing it off as what someone else wants.
In her personal life Arabella is less rigid, less professional, but still conducts herself with authority and power. She holds the same standards as she does professionally. If she were to be seen partaking in some activity deemed below her, even in her own time, it would ruin her position of authority. She is a keen reader, and can often be found lost in a good book, or so it seems. Though she can get absorbed in some activities, she is always alert to what is around her. She will occasionally go riding outside the settlement, or practice fencing with her privately employed instructor. She also makes sure she is seen among the general population. A figure of authority is that much greater if it is close. By showing herself, a person people look up to, as someone leading a normal life Arabella can make them feel like they could just maybe be like her. A foolish dream, but it doesn’t matter how realistic it is, if they believe it then she can use it. Arabella never lets her view slide from what it important; the dominance of the government and the maintaining of the status quo.
the history,
»»mother: Erika Gladstone
»»father: Richard Gladstone
»»siblings: None
»»others: None
»»background:
From the very beginning Arabella’s life was set. From the moment her mother found out she was pregnant her future was being prepared. Richard Gladstone organized the finest tutors and nannies for her. When she was born he looked into her barely open eyes and told her she would one day rule. From that day forth she was shaped and molded into the perfect leader of the people. She learned to walk, she learned to talk, and then the lessons truly began. Some would say she was too young, but from only a few years old she was taught both in the conventional sense, such as how to read and write, and in a more specialized sense. She was taught etiquette, language, politics. Despite what people might think, Richard had planned this well, he taught his daughter from a young age, but not so young that she couldn’t understand. She took to her lessons like a duck to water. She was always eager to learn more. Her father was pleased to see this, and watched his daughter with pride as the years passed. Even though she was young Arabella was allowed little free time if any. She was woken early, ate and washed, and immediately commenced lessons, with only a few breaks for food and rest. Though she did wish that she was allowed time to just have fun she knew that it was necessary. Her father never hesitated to tell her how important she would be and how everything she was doing would prepare her for that. She was raised in the belief that she was one of the most important people in the world.
As she grew her teaching regime grew with her. Lessons became more difficult, and her days were, if possible, fuller than before. Failure was met with harsh punishment, as was any attitude her father considered to be improper. She learned very quickly that angering her father was the worst thing she could do. As such she strived to please him in everything she did. All her work, every achievement was for him. As she grew she learned not only useful political skills but also survival skills. She learned how to ride and how to fight. Fencing and archery were lessons she took to particularly well. She was taught how to survive in the wilderness, how to start a fire, how to attract or avoid attention, how to kill a good few animals and how to prepare them, which parts were best to eat and which should be avoided. She was taught by frontiersmen and hunters, scholars and psychologists who gave her the knowledge to lead the people, actors and stage-masters who helped her to control herself and change at will. And through all this she hardly ever left her father’s residence. She didn’t even see the city until she was ten years old, when the whole family attended an important event. Though Arabella can’t remember what it was for, she remembered the joy she had felt at being allowed outside. Though she hid it well, nothing escaped her gaze. Inside she was ready to burst with excitement but on the outside she was the stoic picture of a perfect daughter. Over the years her father seemed to become harder and harder to please. After that event he showed his pride for her for the first time in over a year.
The older she got the more she was brought into the public eye. She was shown as a future leader, one who would be perfect. It was a lot to live up to, but Arabella knew she could do it. From the moment she had looked out at the people of the settlement, the people that would soon be hers, she knew she could rule. She was raised, trained, formed into a paragon of leadership. Her voice carried weight, even before she was officially a member of the government a great many of them heeded her word. She wasn’t given a proper position in the government until she turned eighteen. Her birthday party was an office and a stack of problems. She had never had a proper birthday in her life, so it was nothing new, just a new challenge to overcome. She was given a mid-ranking position, and if anyone was doubtful of her abilities in such a position they were soon put right. In just two years she made her way up the ranks until she was answering only to the council themselves. She became the public figurehead everyone wanted; someone to look up to, someone who not only promised to solve the people’s problems but actually delivered. Though the council ruled, she spoke to the people, she conveyed what they were doing and how it would benefit the common folk. She wasn’t universally loved, but even those who disliked her had to agree that she got things done. If there was a doubt about her it was that what she said was greater than what she actually did. She was a master at making anything sound good, and for the most part the people bought it. She became known by a great many as the Governess. Though most put an adjective of choice in before it, some positive some not so, all agreed that she seemed the greatest person to set the will of the council in motion. No-one disputed that she was not one of them, she was not of the same level as the council themselves. They clearly ran things, they called the shots, but it was Arabella Gladstone that made it happen. Some thought that she might one day take over her fathers position, others that she would last as she was for as long as the council did.
Despite her success, Arabella still worked everyday to please her father. It became her greatest weakness. Though she was not as perfect as she seemed, she could hide her problems for the most part. But when her father chose to he could break her down with just a few words. Of course she never did this in public, she was much too useful for that, but he knew she worked so hard, almost did the impossible, just to gain his favor. He manipulated her as much as she manipulated the people. He made sure she never forgets who is are rulers of this land, and where she is in the grand scheme of things. Some day she may take over from him, but until then she serves him.
